High-Tech Marital Aid

Marriage demands open and regular communication. But who has time for this?

Nathalie and I have side-by-side desks at home, each with a thin client computer. Sometimes we get emails that we like to share with the other, so naturally we just forward them, rather than disturb the other's phone conversation or train of thought. When I get such an email from Nathalie, I might have a comment or two, so of course I bounce it right back. Oddly, we often find ourselves engaged in entire email threads back and forth while sitting in the same room. At some point, one of us finally says, "Cut it out already, I'm sitting right here. Just talk!"

E-mail? Your marriage is sooo last century...we've been IM-ing each other from the same room for years!

  2. I think that is absolutely charming. My ex boyfriend (who I met online) and I would type out letters and hand them to each other, especially when we were angry with one another...one day I said "do we ever talk about anything?" We both just laughed. Besides there is a depth to the written word that cannot be conveyed when speaking.

It's a good idea when you want absolute clarity in the message you want to convey since you have think it then type it. Plus, it's so much easier for my husband to type "I'm sorry" than to say it.
